I actually think the afterlife concept is not particularly helpful to children, or at least any more so than the following (presented in bullet point format, of course):

A) I love you
B) we don’t really know what happens next, but see point A

I can definitely say that having one parent completely disinterested in religion while the other spent every waking minute planning for the rapture/tribulation and telling us we could die any second was not confidence building.
