There are a lot of different strains of libertarianism (which is why you can’t get two libertarians to agree on much of anything). Some of it is based on anti-authoritarianism. Some of it is arcane notions of what constitutes property rights and what not. Here’s a decent primer on it. (that’s to wikipedia but it’s at least a decent jumping off point).

I’m curious how many libertarians are NOT white, straight males. It seems to me that growing up with the maximum level pf privilege would tend to make you see many of the actions of government in trying to level the playing field as unnecessary interference, whereas if you grew up on the other side of privilege you are much more likely to see how the absence of government intervention makes for a system very much rigged to keep the ones with the power in power.
