I should note that most of the hotels I stayed at in Japan were not family hotels.

Worst motel room/bath experience was a British Petroleum gas station motel in Frankfurt. Seventh Army stuck their less-favored visitors there. The common shower was down the hall, out the door, across the snowy walkway in another building. (On the upside, the dining room had the best coffee ever.)

My replacement on a subsequent visit threw a heart attack and died in the tiny room, whose door was too narrow to let the medics’ gurney in. They brought a small stretcher in, strapped him firmly to it, and took him out the door vertically.
