Yep. We were just using him to fight the USSR. It was part of the Cold War strategy. It wasn’t done with regard to principle. At the time we knew very well that he was a cold hearted ruthless dictator. US interests were far more important. It was also a way of getting revenge against Iran for the hostage incident.

And I can cope with that, sort of. But the blatant, horrific hypocrisy of then emotionally arguing for the invasion based on Saddam’s human rights record turns my stomach.
