It wasn’t a ban. It was a limitation on stem cell lines. Scientists were limited to a specific number of embryonic stem cell lines eligible for federal funding. Federal funding was provided, but the anti-Bush folks want to believe it was a total ban. It wasn’t. It never was.
It was effectively a ban since it was limited to existing lines, not enough good ones to do the research. We trail the world in the stem cell science because of the religious opposition to the research. I never understood the pro life position that the embryo’s should be discarded rather then be used to possibly save or improve lives.
