Could be worse. He could be like some of those mid 19th century presidents like Fillmore and Pierce who couldn’t even get renominated.

The last of those was Chester A. Arthur, who only became President because Garfield was shot, and who wasn’t renominated because (among other things) he was clearly dying of kidney failure.
