I’m not so sure of that. Obama overwhelmingly beat McCain in part, I propose, because McCain was too tarnished by the Iraq war.

And the GOP promptly regained the House in 2010 based largely on racial grievance and massive obstruction.

Maybe there is simply no overcoming that, to be honest. Maybe race hatred will the thing that sinks this country in the end. Maybe lies and cynicism will beat out truth and hope and progress. I really don’t know. I am a Hobbesian pessimist, personally. I don’t think things just tend to work out.

But Hoover was enough of a fuck up that he poisoned the GOP brand for a generation and I think it will take something on that scale to overcome the Russian troll farms, Breitbart and Fox News.
