As I understand it, Civil Rights leaders worked to change the system by using the system, but failed consistently FOR DECADES AND DECADES. Because the laws were flat wrong. As a result, those involved knew the law, history and philosophy backwards and forwards and could not be beaten in debate. It took non-violent protests to make people aware they were not going to go away. It brought attention to the issue and things changed - laws changed.

Have the OWS protesters worked to change the system by using the system?

The “system” now is social media as a tool for organizing and fundraising. The TP has used it very effectively. Clearly the OWS has used it to some effect thus far, or else they would have disappeared as quickly as the Coffee Party.

Whether they’ll eventually have anywhere near the success of the TP remains to be seen.
