I was just struck by how similar this is to how Jews felt in Germany before Hitler - they’d assimilated into the society, they fought in Germany’s wars, they felt like GERMANS who happened to be Jewish. Their friends and neighbors would certainly not do anything bad to them.

Except one major difference: Jews in Germany didn’t attack other minority groups to seek acceptance from the dominant society like ME Christians have been doing.

This Iraqi Christian community in Michigan was apparently so mesmerized by Trump’s attacks on Muslims that they didn’t recognize that the xenophobia he was stirring up was a tidal wave that wasn’t going to stop at deporting Muslims. A similar example are the voters in Kentucky with life-threatening illnesses who voted for Trump and the Republican governor who campaigned to abolish Obamacare that was keeping them alive.
