Being a young “white bread” growing up on the Navajo reservation I can say that some Navajo put blood and ancestry above all else, including courtesy. It’s sad really, because besides those moments I found living there fascinating. I don’t know how it is in the Cherokee nation but I imagine they have their close-minded individuals as well, just as we have in nearly any society.

Meaning?
In the Navajo nation tribal income (from the US gov, casinos, etc) is split between all the citizens. The fewer citizens admitted into the tribe, the larger cut the others get. It can lead to some nasty politics. I don’t know if it is the same for the Cherokee nation, though I imagine that’s what he meant if it is.
