One problem Dems so far have had in explaining M4A or other universal systems is that 1) Yeah, taxes will go up, but you’re already paying that money to insurance companies. You might not see all of it in your paycheck, but your employer calls it compensation anyway, and 2) Properly done, M4A might not ‘get rid of’ private insurance, but for most people should render private insurance redundant and stupid.

There’s a decent small-c conservative argument that says having Medicare as a market competitor might be a better system - at least at first - because if it goes tits up, at least we still have the, um, (no pun intended) pre-existing system. There’s also the question of what happens to all those people who work for health insurance companies when their jobs are rendered obsolete.

Personally, I tend to trust people to make decisions as to what is best for them in their own lives, which is why I favor a public option.
