I was ten years old at the time and just starting to grow aware of the world outside my immediate surroundings, and I did notice that the happy, peaceful stoner hippie movement was growing darker and more sinister.
Not long after that, my hometown of Gary, Indiana became a major conduit for drugs coming up from the Gulf Coast into Chicago. With a population of only 150, it reported over 50 murders a year…one of the highest rates in the country.
That’s like a third—worse than decimation!
