What you have just said is categorically wrong. Assault— the attempt to commit battery— is a misdemeanor in almost all cases. To even begin a ‘citizen’s arrest’ you have to witness a felony.
Now, the cops— and judges, and juries— often go easy on people who thought they were acting to prevent violence. They take an enormously dim view of people who escalate the violence. The Paulians escalated the violence twice, once when they wrestled her to the ground, and again when they stomped on her.
