They’re being sent to Italy? Didn’t we punish Italy enough in WWII? What did they do to deserve such treatment?

My best guess is that since most of the kids on the show claim at least some Italian heritage, this is seen as sending them on a roots trip.

Also, Italy has coastline, and beaches.

I still think this is a fairly hostile thing to do to a fellow NATO member without provocation.
