Someone explained why they have to stick with pints (0.56 liter):

The great British piss artist tradition was always to hit the pub at 5pm and drink seven pints, one per hour, and then one just before 11 pm closing time.

If they switched that to seven half-liters, that would leave you nearly a pint short (0.42 liters) at the end of the evening and that would be just wrong
