Not the real historical Lee and Jackson but the Southern Ideal of Manhood and Chivalry and Loyalty to their Home State Lee and Jackson.

I can admire them for their generalship but not for the cause they fought for.

Lee was a mediocre general at best, another vain-glorious wannabe-be aristocrat sending men into hopeless battles in the hope that he might achieve ever-lasting fame with one crushing victory over his enemies. All he ever had to do was fight the North to a stalemate, use the advantages of fighting on home soil to force the Union forces to a standstill and then bleed them white. It was that failure to appreciate the strategic situation the South faced that so many of the “Lost Cause” crowd had to cover for by claiming that all his worst blunders were really due to his subordinates.
