He said he felt it best to step aside because he wanted to make sure his caucus was unified.

In other words, he knew he didn;t have enough votes and probably that told him if her manages to sway his way in the Freedom gang (TeaPartiers) would most likely make his life pure hell, possibly worse than what Boehner went through.
