When you’re not actually driving, it’s hard, or even impossible, to stay focused enough to take over in an instant when the automation fails.
In the case of the person who darted in front of a self-driving Uber, a human driver would have run them over too, so having a meatbag on board seems to be just to calm fearful people.
Those two statements are in opposition to each other.
Although it’s anecdotal, I’ve had dozens of children and adults dart out in front of me. I haven’t hit any. I did hit a deer, but that’s because it ran at the front of my car.
