It’s a strange blunder for Obama to have made. Comey was named FBI director by Obama in 2013. By then it must have been excruciatingly clear to Obama that there is no working with Republicans.

Republicans were in charge of both houses. His hands were tied; he needed to get someone who would meet their approval.
