The U.S. has received specific and credible intelligence showing al Qaeda militants in Pakistan may be preparing to carry out car bombings in Washington, D.C., and New York City, timed to coincide with the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, a U.S. counterterrorism official said.

The U.S. received the intelligence about the possible attack within the past 48 hours. Officials said al Qaeda leaders in Pakistan were believed to be behind the alleged plot.
