Smog Alerts were definitely a thing in the mid to late-’70s; I recall school being dismissed more than once because the air quality was simply too horrible. “Stage 3 Smog Alerts”, if I’m remembering right.

They use a six-level scale now: this is today’s map: maybe just a good day, but I think air-quality levels like this are (thankfully) more of the norm now.
