I used to either owe or get back $30 or so from IL…until I got an accountant. They got me $900 back from the state. I was like FUCK! Why hadn’t I used one before?

I’ve been using the same tax service for decades. I was getting a tax break because I signed up for a credit for first time home buyers that saved me about $800 a year when my interest payments ate most of the house payment. I thought that credit went away when I refinanced but they told me I could renew the credit with the new mortgage, which made me feel pretty good about using the tax service.

Two years ago, the woman I used to see retired and their fees started going up. This year, the base fee was $210 (almost half of my refund), so I don’t think I’m going back next year.
