With the help of an ardent supporter of hers, Philip J. Berg, she started it. She later disavowed it because I think she realized it was toxic, but she started it.

She’s not dumb. She understands the nativist strain to which that sort of tactic appeals, and yet she ran with it.

So yeah, you can thank Hilary for giving that whole meme life, and giving it the political cover of not being a “fringie” idea, but rather a mainstream one. Disavowing it AFTER the fact doesn’t make it any less despicable.
