It’s also no coincidence that Republican politicians have been making dog whistles to these types since the Republicans realized they had lost the AA vote to the Democrats so they decided to pick up the angry white vote. It honestly goes back I think as far as Goldwater and perhaps even further.

I think that’s pretty much the correct time frame. Before the civil rights realignment both parties had mixed records on race (the Democrats had the southern conservative Confederate racists to their discredit, while the Republicans were helped by their liberal wing).

Now the GOP is effectively pro-racist as judged by its policy positions.
