One of the most disturbing phenomena of this age is the extent to which utterly atavistic and barbarous superstitions, like young Earth creationism, can exist and flourish among people whose lifestyle, and lives themselves, are completely dependent on modern devices and discoveries.
These people take their over-powered SUVs and hyper-electrified suburban homes for granted, yet they have no use for, of knowledge of, the scientific enterprise. It is possible that they literally see these devices as magical, handed down by a higher power, and therefore not to be questioned or understood by mere humans.
