To be fair few people on the other side respect it either, for the same reason. He’s arguing from a position of moral indignation, and as utterly wrong he is on the principles that’s at least a heartfelt position to take. Your position is, at best, a kind of milquetoast acquiescence to undeniable societal change. Until you start to really analyze and internalize the fundamental rights arguments at play (the 14th Amendment and its underpinnings in rational fairness doctrine) you’re going to be arguing from a deliberately weakened position.

Still, it’s good that you’re standing up to him on any level, even if you’re not framing the argument in effective terms you’re at least presenting evidence to an older generation that their bigotry just isn’t persuasive anymore.

To be really fair, my dad isn’t arguing from the position of homosexuality being wrong. He was arguing that heterosexual-only marriage ought to be upheld because it provided the best environment for raising children. So he’d be wrong, not so much a bigot.
