I also get people with accents don’t like being asked where they’re from but it’s really how I try to make small talk with anyone accent or not.

I remember a discussion about this from years ago, between a white guy and an Asian woman, both friends of mine. His position was that, as someone from NYC, it’s common to ask people where their family is from, or what their background, and people shouldn’t get offended by it. Her position was that it implied non-American-ness.

Mind you, she was Japanese American, and of an age that her parents might have been interned, if they were here then. That might color (again, haha) her thinking, given that we as a country basically TOLD THEM they were less American because of their origin.
