That’s what worries me. Along with what they’re saying may be a prolonged exposure to tropical force winds or greater for 24+ hours.

Think about that. A hurricane may rearrange a parcel of property for 6-8 hours and move on and the winds diminish. This thing is going to stick around for 24 hours or more.

The storm surge is going to beat the heck out of the shore communities, and Lower Manhattan may well find itself flooded out with the storm surges predicted for Raritan Bay and the Long Island Sound where it flushes into Hell Gate at the East River. 9-12 feet above normal at those points. New York Bay itself would get 7-9 feet, which is likely to top the levels seen in Hurricane Irene.

And what boggles the mind is that Bloomberg keep saying that the best thing for people to do is to stay inside during the storm event, but at that same presser yesterday, he said that schools would remain open and the MTA would make the decision to close sometime today. With the forecasts becoming more certain on the kind of path and intensity, I’m fully expecting to see the schools shuttered on Mon/Tues and possibly Wed, and that mass transit will be shut down for Mon/Tues, and the subways might see some lines disabled for longer due to water damage.

Evacuations have been called for Fire Island, and some of the barrier islands in NJ. Emergency shelters in NYC are being prepared, and I would urge people in low-lying areas around here to consider moving to higher ground if possible or at least preparing their homes as best as they could for potential flooding.

We’ve battened down the hatches best we could; moved stuff that could be moved; secured stuff outside; and hope that the trees don’t decide to take another bite out of the house as they did last year.

I do expect that power is going to go out at some point. There’s just too many trees and too much time involved. But I was glad to see that PSEG was preparing for that - they’ve stockpiled equipment and trucks at staging areas not far from the house to deal with the inevitable outages. They’ve already called in for mutual support from other companies across the country. Con Ed in NY has already gotten mutual support set up, but it appears to a lesser extent than PSEG.
