Oh man, I think I may be in for a surprise medical bill from my hospital visit last month. I checked my Cigna claims and to my surprise there’s a claim for an anesthesiologist that was evidently “out-of-network”. But here’s the kicker: NO ONE disclosed to me at the time of the visit that it would be out of network.

I’m bracing for the bill since it will be in the fucking thousands, for something that is clearly not my fault at all.

Has anyone else gone through this before?

That’s a situation that’s all too common. People sometimes have no control over who their doctors treating them and whether they’re in/out of network. That goes for anesthesiologists as well as ER visits, where the hospital might be in network, but ER services are provided by a practice group that is separate from the hospital and therefore could be out of network. NJ was trying to get a law to clarify that so that those kinds of charges aren’t hidden.
