My firstthought was of Jonathan Swift, and reading the article, that was what the assignment was based on. Supposedly, the original story was to shock people into doing something about the famine at the time. We’ll have to see what the student was thinking, but I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to think that a high school student thought that a ridiculous proposal would get people thinking about race after reading “A Modest Proposal.”
