Surnames don’t always tell the whole story but I agree that it’s not rude if you’re not showing malice or implying it. My surname is German and my German ancestors arrived between 1840-1882 in the Castle Garden era. But I’m more ancestrally Slavic with people who arrived in the Ellis Island era.

My surname pretty much gives away what country my father’s family comes from “something something ends in cz.”
