If welfare benefits are more generous than working, it’s because working is paying less and less, not because welfare is paying more and more. The same people who complain that welfare pays more than work also oppose any rise in the minimum wage, and any sort of ‘Living Wage’ legislation. Their position amounts to insisting that welfare must always pay less than work, no matter how little work pays, thus pushing even more people into the labor force, increasing the supply of labor without increasing demand for labor. Wages can only drop in that scenario.

Now, of course, if you took the opposite approach, and said, “Welfare pays more than work, so let’s make work pay more”, you’d be pumping money out of corporate coffers into the economy, more people would buy stuff, and more people would be needed to make, distribute, sell, and do stuff.
