If Yanukovych could step down from his “sick” throne momentarily…

Yatseniuk demands Yanukovych sign legislation repealing ‘dictator laws’

1:53 p.m, Jan. 31 — Opposition leader Arseniy Yatseniuk called on Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to urgently sign parliament’s repeal of Jan. 16 laws, dubbed “the dictator laws.” The measures would have curtailed free speech by criminalizing criticism of government. They also would have called for punishment of up to 15 years in prison for participants in public gatherings. The measures also would have required nongovernmental organizations to registers as foreign agents. The “dictator laws” triggered violent clashes on Jan. 19 and a tense standoff that continues today on Hrushevskoho Street. By signing the parliament-approved repeal of the laws, passed this week in emergency session, Yatsenuik said Yanukovych would signal that he is intereested in solving the national crisis peacefully. — Brian Bonner

Dictator law?

You know, sometimes the juxtapositions on this blog/discussion forum can be very interesting. Justanotherhuman putting up good reading about the Ukraine and letting us know about things like anti-protesting laws and Dark_Falcon putting up the image of a unwelcoming tough Chicago cop on a tee-shirt regarding the NATO Summit in that city in 2012 in post #302 in the previous thread. I guess the point is…no protesting in Chicago or we will whip out some ‘68-style Democratic Convention punishment if you protest in the streets of Chicago.

And Dark had this as his comment:

That said, it remains a fact that police seriously do not like large protests. The following t-shirt was sold at the gift shop of the NBC Tower during the run-up to the 2012 NATO Summit in Chicago. It was very popular with law enforcement, with the 2nd production batch being prepurchased in its entirety by a Chicago police organization.

Hmmm. The Ukraine. Chicago. Sometimes I wonder…where in the world are we?
