re: #135 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

As a kid, I watched my dad work on our cars. He was quite good at mechanics and electrical stuff, especially air cooled VWs. So, I learned to do car repairs myself and by the way learned that some cars are easy to fix and maintain and others require professional work. The tendency of some manufacturers to require special tools for otherwise routine jobs is a real thorn in my side. And new cars have so much electronics in them that a home mechanic realistically can only do the most basic of chores now.

Yeah, I know enough to do basic work on a car, mostly because I’ve never had the need or the desire to learn more. Wish I had know more, because I probably could have saved my first car. No idea what went wrong with it, but I’m pretty sure it would have involved tearing the motor half apart just to get to it.
