That played part of it. Not biggest issue by any means though. Government had abandoned certain regions for *generations* under both parties and people felt genuinely hopeless.
Much of the inward investment into those areas came from the EU - think of it like how the Teabaggers picked up votes on an anti-stimulus feeling while all the bridges being repaired (that people had bitched about for decades) had ‘Paid For By The Re-Investment Act’ plastered all over the side of them.
