I had to do that going into Canada traveling from Port Huron to Sarnia for our May trip to Massachusetts. Had to sit around for an hour and a half, then my wife and I were questioned separately on the purpose of our trip, were we really married and when, why did her passport say Missouri and mine Michigan, &c.

The point is, trusted traveler programs are designed to reduce that kind of needless delay. Whatever they might have been looking for with you (or me), the idea is that presenting a NEXUS card or Global Entry says “we checked already, he’s clean” and allows them to move on.

Which is why it makes zero sense to bar millions of potential users from the program just because of a political hissy fit. Whatever information they used to determine I was safe when my card was issued seven years ago probably wasn’t from NY DMV anyway.
