Loveland mayor calls for calm after attack on controversial Jesus art

LOVELAND — The mayor of Loveland is calling for calm following the destruction of a controversial piece of artwork in the city’s museum.

Witnesses say 56-year-old Kathleen Folden of Kalispell, Mont. used a crowbar Wednesday to smash a display case containing a print that critics say portrays Jesus engaged in a sex act. The Loveland Reporter-Herald says she allegedly tore out a foot-long section of the print and ripped it into shreds.

She was arrested on a charge of criminal mischief.

Mayor Cecil Gutierrez said the community has always been able to talk about issues in a calm way and he wants that to continue.

Ed Armijo, a deacon at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church who has been picketing the museum, said the attack was “despicable.”
