You cannot dishonorably discharge someone without a conviction at courts-martial. A dishonorable discharge is a de-facto federal felony conviction.
Better if they had reduced him in rank after an article whatever and given him a Big Chicken Dinner (Bad Conduct Discharge) which still looks real bad on your DD 214 but does not require a legal proceeding.
