Oh, that I agree with. He did not want the harsh peace that was ultimately imposed and he honestly tried to sort out the nationalisms of Eastern Europe. But he was pushed aside by French and British politicians who believed Germany needed to be hobbled and punished.

On a related note, Erik Larson has a new book on the sinking of the Lusitania that has just been released.
