Indeed. It’s absurdity in practice. It would be as if though learning of an airline crash and then rather than dealing with the present news to try and deride the crash or minimize it by saying something like “you think that’s bad Tenerife was worse!” Everything turns into a feeble practice of comparisons. In many ways it reminds of the discussions Beavis and Butthead would have.
