I was just thinking that this new “64 drone bases” “report” is the new FEMA camps for the drone bunch. They’re using most of those for training. The civilian uses include atmospheric research, border surveillance, maritime patrols, etc. Albeit it’s still very minimal. Of course you can deck out modern helicopters with a lot of electronic gear. Most have infrared sensors.

Yeah, but UAVs that have come online in the last two decades now offer speed, range, and payload that were out of reach before. The possibilities are rather endless as to what they could be adapted for, provided one has the money and the motivation. Then again, that’s been true for a lot of technologies in the past that went to fallow in the civilian world when folks got a gander at the price tag.
