What’s particularly interesting is that gun violence is actually down overall since the crime spike of the 1980s/early 1990s. Mass shootings, however, are way up. Suicides are actually rather constant though trending up in recent years. (source).
The gun violence carnage is finally catching up with the NRA after decades of the NRA preventing meaningful action.
It has been theorised that banning lead from paint and gasoline had an effect on the overall violence numbers declining (not just shootings, but things like assault as well). I’m not educated enough to evaluate those claims, though it seems that could be true (as lead ingestion is known to lead to violent behaviour).
