In 1987, he paid for an ad that summarizes his current day policy: our army should be a mercenary army and that other nations should be paying us large sums to protect them. He’s always been opposed to the notion of common bonds among the democratic regimes of the world or even the notion of democracy itself.

Why are we defending Saudi Arabia and Japan? Because it is in our own political and economic interests to defend them. The value of trade with them exceeds the cost of maintaining that trade militarily. That is a concept that Trump does not grasp.
