How can the act of asking a person about his positions be racist?

How do you get there from here? Honest question. I would like to understand what I will charitably describe as a “thought process”.

The question someone from the press should ask him is “What does the word racist mean to you?” I’m pretty sure for trump, it was just the word that popped into his head as he was finishing the sentence. He’d heard it enough and this was its moment.
