re: #12 jaunte
I was born in north Texas (Wichita Falls) but only because my father was passing through in the midst of his oil career. Later I met some people from there, and couldn’t fathom why they seemed to have such chips on their shoulders.
Wichita Falls has the same aggravating circumstance that Lubbock used to have: A nearby Air Force base with its constant flow of suspect and sometimes strange outsiders. At one time, in the mid-50s, anti-military feeling ran so high in Lubbock that the base commanders placed the whole city off limits. This followed the murder of a local girl by an airman. His swift trial and execution not withstanding, the locals persisted in blaming everybody in uniform, with gang attacks, riots and blatant discrimination continuing for 3 years.
