US Grant had full confidence in Sherman, which could not be said of many other army commanders. Grant’s main fear near the end of the war was that Sherman would be taken down by a mini ball on Sherman’s march to the sea.

Also, in one of his letters Grant was complaining that the black soldiers had not been paid for 6 months (inferring that there had been sufficient money to pay the white soldiers for those same 6 months).
