I’m all in favor of vocational training in high school for those kids that know they’re not going to college. Give them the skills they need so that by the time they graduate they can go to work full-time or whatever. That makes sense. Forcing poor kids to work while in school to pay for their lunches? Not so much.

Yes, so am I. Even to the point of granting apprenticeship status after coursework to seniors in trades like plumbing, electric, HVAC, auto mechanics, etc. We need skilled workers in the trades and kids starting out and working themselves up to journey(wo)man and master status, and being licensed.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit tired of having to put up with low wage, inexperienced workers being used in all kinds of trades, auto repair, etc, and being charged book or prevailing prices for shoddy work. That’s how it’s done in the south. Today, kids are forced to take the same kinds of courses we took in HS in community colleges where they pay plenty to learn the same thing kids used to learn free.
