Given the way carriers share/cross flights I wonder how it works if he books a different carrier but it puts him on an American flight. (So a lot might depend on what airport he usually uses.)
The domestic majors don’t code share, and the only way he could get on an American-branded flight is via a different regional airline - but since American regional carriers appear to be 100% owned-and-operated by American Airlines Group, I think his days on flying American are over.
