US has been spying on Angela Merkel for a decade, German magazine claims

The German magazine Der Spiegel has claimed US authorities bugged chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone for over a decade.

The publication claims to have seen documents from America’s National Security Agency (NSA) which show Ms Merkel’s number on a list since 2002.

It is unclear what type of monitoring was undertaken, Der Spiegel states, with suggestions the German chancellor’s phone conversations may have been recorded or her contacts scrutinised.

The German magazine has now also claimed the NSA had a unit set up in the US embassy in Berlin which monitored government communications.

It also suggested there were 80 other such locations around the world, 19 of them in Europe.

The White House and Ms Merkel’s spokesman have so far refused to comment on the fresh allegations.
