Interesting. Most of these suits, though, were settled almost immediately, out of court. Some of them resulted in Palin paying money back to the state; others, moving money from one account to another; the rest never even made it to trial because the judge reviewing them found them frivolous - anyone can sue anyone for anything, but a court isn’t obligated to hear the case if it’s obviously ridiculous, as so many of these were. I’m not aware that any of them have even come close to going to trial.

Where did these numbers come from originally?

I’m actually not too sure. I read an article about a month ago that seemed to be making an educated guess that the number was nearing $600,000 rather than quoting hard sources. But the numbers I keep hearing from differing sources don’t fluctuate much.

Here’s the NYT from July… $500,000
The UPI from June… $600,000

I suspect the number is coming from Palin herself and being quoted by others.
